Wow Blog! Economy of Style
Radio Host Michael Baisden’s Pay It Forward segments always bring a smile to my face. Albeit, a smile that can quickly turn into a LOL/LMBO when that inevitable caller gets precious airtime, only to explain how paying their cell phone bill and being able to communicate (badly—obviously) is their bright idea for giving back.
Well this is my pay it forward, and it comes in the form of Dasheen’s first Wow Blog!
Now this is not necessarily about who is at the top any prominent lists. There will be time enough for that, and I will take a moment to say congratulations to all those working their butts off to make online content varied and keep the medium relevant.
That being said, this is just about who I stumble across and love enough to take the time to go back into those archives.
My inaugural Wow Blog! is represented by none other than Psyche and her Economy of Style.
I first got hip to this beautiful lady and her stylings through Dasheen reader Thérèse. She said:
I love finding Caribbean style/lifestyle bloggers. Wanted to point you in the direction of another Kittitian online at http://economyofstyle.blogspot.com/. Don’t know if you’ve come across her before, but she is one well-dressed woman, as you will see from her blog. Her updates are intermittent, but always worth it. Check it out and let me know what you think, and keep up the good work with Dasheen.
Thanks again Thérèse!
Psyche is the real deal. And I love a deal. In fact, I require it!Here’s our Q/A:
1. Who is Psyche?
I am a social science researcher with ambivalent feelings about the unfashionable qualities of the academic profession to which I belong. I am also driven to solve this self-imposed riddle: how does a woman who’s always on a budget satisfy her wide ranging tastes?
2. Why Economy of Style? What does your style, site mean to you?
I chose the name Economy of Style because it blended two of my interests—economics and fashion.
3. Do you have a style philosophy? If so what is it?
My clothes reflect who I am right now and that would probably be quietly sophisticated. On a typical day, I would be wearing a luxe-looking, perfectly fit sheath dress and patent pumps. I like polished looks that incorporate my strange fascination with studs, zippers, and animal prints. Integral to my style philosophy is making sensible purchases, which could mean acquiring high quality items at discounted prices or investing in classic items.
4. Have you ever considered a career in fashion?
Fashion was something that drew my interest. Fashion was something that I thought about. Fashion was something that engaged my creative sensibilities. Fashion was something that linked me to communities beyond my local community. But, fashion was never presented as a viable career option.
Blogging has given me an opportunity to participate in the fashion world in ways I would not have imagined years ago.
5. Who is your favorite Caribbean designer(s)?
I am a huge fan of Judith Rawlins of Brown Sugar. I appreciate the simplicity and textures of her designs.
6. What do you think is the Caribbean style aesthetic?
I think it is as varied as the cultures of the Caribbean are varied. I think of color. I think of prints that have been inspired by our black heritage and the beautiful landscapes of the islands. And, I think of textures that are easy breezy to suit island environments. Of course, for better or worse, Caribbean style is influenced by American trends.
7. Any must read blogs?
I have met a lot of fabulous, budget savvy friends in the blogosphere. We draw inspiration from each other. Unfortunately, blogs tend to have a short lifespan. So, many of my earliest influences such as Sober Shopper have discontinued their blogs. What’s My Style and The Budget Babe are two of my longtime favorites.
8. What are you reading currently?
9. Listening to in heavy rotation?
Intimate Reservations—Tarrus Riley
Wildfire—Tarrus Riley
It Will Come—Tarrus Riley
Who Feels It Knows It—Romain Virgo
Lioness on the Rise—Queen Ifrica
Feel Like Crying—Infamus
Believe Me—Jah Cure
Fatima—K’Naan
You Stop My Heart—Melanie Fiona
All I Ever Think About—Chrisette Michele
10. How has culture fed your imagination?
There are many aspects of culture that nourish me. So, I can briefly say that fashion influences my intellectual and artistic ideas by giving me multiple ways to present and represent myself. My work as a blogger motivates me to read a range of sites and magazines focusing on evolving styles. And, the blog also gives me an outlet to chronicle my fashion journeys through photographic and written compositions.
Thank you Psyche for the opportunity to interview. You enliven my blog life with your contribution to the blogosphere. Happy Stylings!
